Our ferrets love bedding made by THE FERRET HAMMOCK. Plus, 50% of the profits benefit two local ferret shelters including FerretsFirst.
Our Ohio Rescue Ferrets are part of a rescue of almost 600 ferrets in September of 2007 from a ferret breeder in Ohio who, for a number of reasons, was no longer able to care for his animals. FerretsFirst obtained 13 ferrets from the rescue operation, and immediately began work on vaccinations, medical care, spays/neuters and socialization. Some of these ferrets are now ready for adoption, and we’d like potential adopters to know more about them.
When first rescued, these ferrets were quite unaccustomed to interaction with humans. Since then we have worked very hard to help these ferrets understand that they have nothing to fear from people. Some of the ferrets are now ready for adoption, and others still require more socialization work. All ferrets that are ready for adoption have been spayed or neutered, tested negative for ADV and are current on vaccinations. We will only place ferrets that we feel have achieved a level of socialization that will make them good candidates for adoption.
Our Ohio Rescue Ferrets are very special ferrets in many ways. We want potential adopters to be fully aware of what they can expect when they bring their Ohio Rescue Ferrets home.
The Ohio Rescue Ferrets are not typical “pet store ferrets”. Unlike pet store ferrets, these ferrets have been allowed to reach sexual maturity before being spayed or neutered, and accordingly, they are bigger, heavier and stockier than pet store ferrets. Once socialized, their personalities can be characterized mostly as “extremely exuberant”. Having lived in small breeder cages all of their lives, many crave and relish the opportunity to get out and play with people and other ferrets. Though socialized, it is possible that they may still occasionally play rough with humans and other ferrets. At times they are easily startled and may also react to sudden movements and loud noises. However, we fully expect that the Ohio Rescue Ferrets will become loving and grateful companion pets once they settle in to their forever homes.
Finally, a note about descenting:
Ferrets typically have two sources of scent. All ferrets secrete a characteristic musky smell that most people (especially ferret owners) do not find objectionable, and that can be easily managed by keeping bedding and cages tidy and by cleaning ferret ears once every week. Ferrets are also born with anal scent glands that are use for self-defense when the ferret is attacked, much like the scent glands found in skunks. In pet store ferrets, these scent glands are typically removed at a very early age before the ferret leaves the breeding facility. You should be aware that with the Ohio Rescue Ferrets, the scent glands are still intact, and if you wish to adopt one or more Ohio Rescue Ferrets, the adoption contract will stipulate that they are not to be de-scented under any circumstances, because, once the ferret has reached adulthood, the de-scenting operation is painful and mutilative in nature.
It is very unlikely that the ferrets you adopt will ever “poof” after they go to their forever homes, since they usually reserve use of this defensive measure for those extreme times when they are attacked by another animal or on the losing end of an all-out battle with another ferret. In the very unlikely event of a “poof”, we want you to know that the order dissipates quickly when subjected to a little bit of ventilation, and does not adhere to clothing, skin and other surfaces.
